More than 80 participants participated in a conference on the cost of the gaps in the Euro-Med Free Trade area organised by the MedAlliance in Brussels in April 2011. Based on a study done by ECIPE, a Brussels based think-tank, the MedAlliance argues that there are substantial losses for the business due to the missing parts of the EMFTA. The conference had been carried out in the framework of the “Invest in Med” programme – a programme co-financed by the European Commission and managed by the Medalliance Consortium including ANIMA Investment Network, EUROCHAMBRES, ASCAME and Businessmed as well as their special partners UNIDO, GTZ and Euromediterranée. Invest in Med has the ambition to contribute to a sustainable development in the Mediterranean region by increasing both the volume and the quality of the investment flows, strengthening the Euro-Med business partnerships and enhancing cross-Mediterranean trade. The Invest in Med programme aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean. Funded at 75% by the European Union over the 2008-2011 period, it is implemented by the MedAlliance consortium, which associates economic development organisations (ANIMA, leader of the programme), CCIs (ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES), and business federations (BUSINESSMED). The members of these networks, as well as their special partners (UNIDO, GTZ, EPA Euroméditerranée, World Bank, etc.), gather a thousand of economic actors - mobilised through pilot initiatives centered on key Mediterranean promising niches. Each year, a hundred operations associate the 27 countries of the European Union and 9 Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. www.invest-in-med.eu
