Mediterranean City: Shaping the Future

The first edition of MEDA City Forum held in November 2009 has demonstrated that the commitment to create a platform for meeting, discussion, reflection and businesses is opportune and necessary for the Mediterranean region. For two days, 300 participants assisted to lectures and debates, and took an active part in the business to business meetings, which allowed them to identify new business opportunities in the Mediterranean.

Today, 50% of the world's population lives in cities. Cities are the engine of the economic development, a nation's primary source of jobs and wealth creation, they produce goods and provide services that generate economic opportunities for the whole country. This forum once again offers a space for dialogue, collaboration and partnership among the key actors that contribute to the growth of the Mediterranean cities. In this new edition, the following subjects will be discussed:

  • New partnerships for Mediterranean cities
  • Mediterranean city management: financing the cities
  • The value of a Mediterranean city brand
  • Major projects transforming the city
  • Mediterranean urban transport

Sectors

Targets & objectives
The Invest in Med programme aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean. Funded at 75% by the European Union over the 2008-2011 period, it is implemented by the MedAlliance consortium, which associates economic development organisations (ANIMA, leader of the programme), CCIs (ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES), and business federations (BUSINESSMED). The members of these networks, as well as their special partners (UNIDO, GTZ, EPA Euroméditerranée, World Bank, etc.), gather a thousand of economic actors - mobilised through pilot initiatives centered on key Mediterranean promising niches. Each year, a hundred operations associate the 27 countries of the European Union and 9 Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. www.invest-in-med.eu
