The Maghreb in the Lead – Partners For Green Growth

Workshop / Conference

Morocco, Casablanca,
From 05-17-2010 to 05-18-2010

In recent years, the three Maghreb countries have embraced sustainable development, which now underpins basic values and principles and the commitments of the public authorities. This focus is reflected in a number of national declarations and charters.

After four years of joint activities, REME, supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (German technical cooperation - GTZ), is organising a regional conference on the environment in collaboration with the Union Tunisienne de l´Industrie, du Commerce et de l'Artisanat (Tunisian union for industry, commerce and handicrafts - UTICA), the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI), the Confédération Générale des Entreprises du Maroc (Moroccan business confederation - CGEM) and with the support of the Ministries of Industry and Environment of the three countries. The purpose of the conference is to support the efforts of those responsible for the environment in the Maghreb countries and promote continuing exchanges between them and international environmental experts.

Targets & objectives
The Invest in Med programme aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean. Funded at 75% by the European Union over the 2008-2011 period, it is implemented by the MedAlliance consortium, which associates economic development organisations (ANIMA, leader of the programme), CCIs (ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES), and business federations (BUSINESSMED). The members of these networks, as well as their special partners (UNIDO, GTZ, EPA Euroméditerranée, World Bank, etc.), gather a thousand of economic actors - mobilised through pilot initiatives centered on key Mediterranean promising niches. Each year, a hundred operations associate the 27 countries of the European Union and 9 Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. www.invest-in-med.eu
