The MedAlliance Board, examined and adopted on April 24, 2009 in Barcelona a series of proposals to foster the Mediterranean economy while addressing the current crisis:

The MedAlliance Board,  which gathers 24 organisations members of ANIMA Investment Network, BUSINESSMED, EUROCHAMBRES, ASCAME and their special partners UNIDO, GTZ and Euroméditerranée, examined and adopted on April 24, 2009 in Barcelona a series of proposals to foster the Mediterranean economy while addressing the current crisis:

  • Offer substantial financial support (€0,5 to 1m per project) to ensure a continuation of the most promising initiatives that will emerge from the Invest in Med programme;
  • Sponsor and support investment and business summits in each of the EU Mediterranean partner countries;
  • Create instruments supporting SME development and easing their access to financing. Launch an ambitious SME support action plan in the Med region;
  • Create attractive conditions for involving the Diasporas and expatriated in the Med countries economic development, including by directing the remittances toward SME support ;
  • Invest massively in vocational training to support suffering sectors (export driven activities) and develop competencies in most promising domains (organic agriculture, logistics and distribution, pharmacy, new energies, urban development, ICT);
  • Fully integrate the countries that are in the accession and pre-accession process to the European Union and that are located around the Mediterranean to the Invest in Med programme which is more a synergy programme than a granting programme.

The Invest in Med programme aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean. Funded at 75% by the European Union over the 2008-2011 period, it is implemented by the MedAlliance consortium, which associates economic development organisations (ANIMA, leader of the programme), CCIs (ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES), and business federations (BUSINESSMED). The members of these networks, as well as their special partners (UNIDO, GTZ, EPA Euroméditerranée, World Bank, etc.), gather a thousand of economic actors - mobilised through pilot initiatives centered on key Mediterranean promising niches. Each year, a hundred operations associate the 27 countries of the European Union and 9 Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. www.invest-in-med.eu
