Study N° 32 : Socially Responsible Investment: What Strategy for the Mediterranean?

How can we reinforce the impact of investment on sustainable development in the Mediterranean? ANIMA provides answers and courses of action by publishing a study on “Socially Responsible Investment: What Strategy for the Mediterranean?” as part of the Invest in Med project, supported by the European Commission. Investment is up until now hardly sustainable in the Mediterranean and does not produce all the effects hoped for in economic terms (growth, productivity) but also for society (creation of jobs and skills) and environment (conservation of natural resources). The study provides an outlook of the impacts of investment for the three cornerstones of sustainable development and then presents the stakes, strategies and tools for the four main categories of stakeholders of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) in the Mediterranean: the public authorities, the business support organisations, companies and financial players. The study also proposes three series of recommendations intended for public bodies. They are accompanied by courses of action which could be implemented by ANIMA, its institutional partners and the networks of intermediate operators who work together within the MedAlliance.

Study n°28: Local Investment Promotion in the Mediterranean: a practical compendium

The ongoing deep social unrest shaking up most Med countries is largely a result of unbalanced economic growth. The sustainable development of the region calls for the strengthening of local investment promotion capabilities in order to help Mediterranean territories face a tougher national and international competition for investment, jobs and wealth. This practical compendium comprises 10 case studies, which show different ways of: defining a promotion strategy (conducting a SWOT analysis or benchmark, internally or through a carefully-chosen consultancy); turning your promotion strategy into an effective communication plan (building an image/a brand, forging ahead with the right differentiating messages, favouring suitable tools and channels); fine-tuning your prospecting plan (identifying and canvassing your potential partners and targets, calibrating your tools). Each case study provides: an institutional profile (allocated missions/means put into perspective, national and local economic or institutional peculiarities); an analysis of the organisation’s promotion strategy; an examination of its prospecting and communication plans (elaboration process, output & impact).

Study n°27: The market of eco-sustainable products, services and technologies in the tourist-hotel sector in the MED Region

This study aims at analyzing both the market (supply and demand) of products, services and clean sustainable technologies (water purification technologies, energy efficiency and water services devices, the Ecolabel renewable energy sources services) in the tourist-hotel sector in (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia), and the potential development of demand in these countries.

Study n°26: Yachting centres in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is considered a favourable area for the practice and development of yachting. Despite all these common assets, the Mediterranean presents a noticeable imbalance on the two shores in the yachting aspect with: - A mature market in the North, and an emerging market in the South. - An very dense implantation of marinas on the North shore and scattered marinas on the South shore. This study, carried out by the Marseille Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry lists the main nautical centres of four countries on the Mediterranean: Spain, France, Morocco* and Tunisia, and analyses their functioning and their effect on the tourist economy. It aims to give a detailed view of the potential they represent, through their main projects, the synergies that they develop between tourism and yachting and of their consideration of sustainable development in their approach to yachting.

The Invest in Med programme aims at developing sustainable trade relationships, investments and enterprise partnerships between the two rims of the Mediterranean. Funded at 75% by the European Union over the 2008-2011 period, it is implemented by the MedAlliance consortium, which associates economic development organisations (ANIMA, leader of the programme), CCIs (ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES), and business federations (BUSINESSMED). The members of these networks, as well as their special partners (UNIDO, GTZ, EPA Euroméditerranée, World Bank, etc.), gather a thousand of economic actors - mobilised through pilot initiatives centered on key Mediterranean promising niches. Each year, a hundred operations associate the 27 countries of the European Union and 9 Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. www.invest-in-med.eu
